Some families just feel easy the second you walk in.
This family was calm, warm, present with their son. They hung out at home together while their world was about to change in a couple months.
Mom was about five weeks from her due date, expecting a baby boy. Their son was two and a half, all energy and curiosity. He was more interested in his toy truck, treats, and playing than the camera, which made for better photos than if he’d been posing. Soon he’d be a big brother, and you could feel that shift coming even though he had no idea yet.
We started in the bedroom, soft morning light coming through the blinds. He climbed up next to her and silly kissed her belly. That’s the kind of moment you can’t direct. You just have to be ready for it.
From there we moved through the house the way their actual morning would have gone. They read together on the bed. He stood on his little step stool in the kitchen, helping pour chocolate chips into pancake batter. A potty training chart hung next to his little eating table, stickers and all, the kind of detail that means everything to this family years from now.
We ended in the living room, with his wall of baby pictures right behind them. Soon there will be a new wall, with the four of them.
