This session was thoughtfully planned and intentionally loose.
My photographer friend Rachel Murray Photography had this family on the books for a creative shoot and invited me along to photograph alongside her. We talked through activities and timing ahead of time so the session had structure. Once we arrived, we let the light lead us where to go next and allowed the afternoon to unfold naturally.
Their new home was still just framing. No walls yet. All wood, open light, and the feeling of a beginning.
Instead of trying to make it feel finished or styled, we leaned into where they were right now.
Pizza on the floor. Popsicles brought out as a surprise treat to help everyone cool off. Kids moving in and out of the space. Parents close by, present, and relaxed.

Planning creates ease
This session worked because there was intention behind it. Outfits were simple and neutral. Activities were familiar and low pressure. Everything was prepared ahead of time so once we began, there was nothing to manage.
Following the light gave the session its rhythm. It guided where we paused, where we moved, and when we stayed put. That flexibility allowed the family to remain connected and at ease.
Letting kids lead
We followed the kids’ rhythm throughout the session. When they wanted a break or something to eat, we pivoted or paused. When they needed closeness, it happened naturally.
Some of the most meaningful moments came from the in between. Eating pizza together. Eating popsicles between the framing. Playful movement mixed with quiet connection.
Photos that feel like your life
Years from now, these photos will do more than show what this family looked like. They will bring back the feeling of this season. A new home taking shape. Kids exactly as they were. Time together without pressure.
That is always my goal when I photograph families. To create images that feel familiar, honest, and rooted in real connection.
If you are drawn to sessions that are intentionally planned and guided by light, I would love to create something similar for your family. You can reach out through my contact page to start the conversation.
