Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Las Vegas

Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Las Vegas

Most families wait until fall to book their photos.

And honestly? That makes sense. The weather cools down, the holidays are coming, and everyone seems to do it at the same time. Mostly for upcoming holiday cards.

But if you’ve ever tried to book a photographer in October and found out they were already full, or felt the pressure of squeezing photos into an already packed schedule, there is a better way.

The best time of year for family photos in Las Vegas is honestly… any time of year. You just need to know what each part of the year offers so you can pick what works for your family and your vision for your session.

Here’s a breakdown.

Spring: My Personal Favorite

If I could shoot every session in spring, I would.

Everything comes alive here in a way that surprises people who picture Las Vegas as just desert. The desert shrubs, trees, and grass are green. Birds are out. Little wildflowers pop up here and there. The light is soft and golden and the temperatures are genuinely comfortable. And I get the best clouds this time of year too that adds beautiful dimension to skies at sessions.

Spring sessions feel easy. Families aren’t sweating terribly and the natural backdrop does a lot of the heavy lifting.

If you want lush, bright, fresh-feeling photos, spring is it.

Summer: Hotter in the Valley, Beautiful on the Mountain

Yes, summers here are hot here. We’re not pretending otherwise. It is a desert after-all.

But here’s what a lot of people don’t know: Mt. Charleston is right on the edge of the valley, and depending on where you go on the mountain, it can be 10 to 30 degrees cooler than the valley. When it’s 110° in Las Vegas, it can be a breezy 70° toward the top. It genuinely feels like a different world up there.

Summer mountain sessions are honestly stunning. Pine trees, cool air, golden hour light filtering through the trees. It’s one of my favorite options for families who want something a little different.

And in the summer we can most times start a little earlier due to when the sun dips behind mountains and trees earlier than other spots. Which is a win for kiddos who have earlier bedtimes.

Not a mountain person? In-home sessions are a beautiful option too. Your home, your light, your family exactly as you are right now. No heat, no logistics. Just real life documented beautifully. I LOVE these, by the way.

Fall: A Classic for Good Reason

Fall is gorgeous. The warm tones, the lower light, the way everything feels a little golden. There’s a reason so many families love it. Well, and because most seem to book this time for their holiday cards.

It’s also the most popular time to book, which means photographers fill up fast and popular locations get busy. If fall is your season, just plan ahead. Book early and you’re golden.

One thing worth thinking about: most moms are already pretty stretched by October. If the idea of adding photos to your fall to-do list feels like a lot, the other seasons are genuinely beautiful in their own way, and usually a lot more breathing room.

Fall spots go fast. My fall calendar opens July 15th. If you’re on my email list, you get access two days early.

Winter: Soft Light and Cozy Vibes

We’re a military family. Before Las Vegas, we lived in Montana.

Try -45°F. It is not fun.

Las Vegas winters are not that. Not even close.

Most days are perfectly comfortable for an outdoor session, especially in the late morning or early afternoon. And honestly, winter has some things going for it that other times of year don’t. The light is soft and even. Plus cozy sweaters, layered outfits, and warm textures photograph beautifully.

If your family runs cold or you have little ones who aren’t loving the cool air, an in-home session is a wonderful alternative.

Locations that are packed in fall? Wide open in winter. Just dress appropriately, of course.

So, When Should You Book?

Honestly, it depends on a few things.

What look and feel are you going for? Spring green and fresh, summer mountain vibes, warm fall tones, cozy, soft winter light. Each one is different and beautiful in its own way.

How does your schedule actually look? Some families want to avoid the fall rush. Others are in a sweet spot in January. You know your life better than anyone.

Are these for holiday cards? If the idea of fall already feels like a lot with holiday planning, sports, and school schedules, early fall or even summer might actually serve you better. You’ll have your photos done, your cards ordered, and one less thing on your plate before the rush even starts. Spring works too.

And sometimes the timing chooses you. Maternity sessions have a window. Newborns do too. Knowing that you have beautiful options no matter what time of year it is takes a lot of pressure off.

Whatever the reason, the best time to book is before your ideal dates are gone.
